Rising Star awards
Deloitte and New Zealand Trade & Enterprise this year embarked on a search for the next generation of Deloitte Fast 50 businesses with the Rising Star awards. These awards are for businesses which do not qualify for the 2011 Deloitte Fast 50, but are designed to recognise early-stage, innovative, high-potential companies.

BigLittleBang offers a virtual world for children to have fun and be creative with music, regardless of their musical background. Its objective is to encourage kids in the five to 12-year range to explore music via gaming in a 3D animated, futuristic space environment. Users can create their own unique avatar on the site, explore “planets” and make music with others online in real time. The site also offers a wide variety of safe social networking features such as blogs, newsfeeds, chat and buddy lists.

CropLogic is an online crop management system for potato growers, which provides a dashboard of how well a crop is doing at any given time. It has a range of tools which farmers can use for predicting crop yield and maturity date, by optimising nitrogen and water application. It effectively enables growers to model their crops during the season and identify potential risks to plant growth, enabling early intervention of mitigation efforts.

Barrington Arch is a Christchurch-based architecture and design firm which specialises in crating smart 3D content for building information models (BIM) used by building industry suppliers. The firm’s customers are product manufacturers while the end users of its BIM are architects and construction industry designers. It has developed a software tool and online distribution centre which enables manufacturers to present 3D catalogues so products can be dragged and dropped into the CAD design program used by architects and designers.
